DRAWING
Drawing is the most precious activity an artist has. Everything manifests from this point. It is especially poignant for me when the image is done quickly, as a way of reducing the thinking process to even kick in. 'Fast' drawing is a way for me to discover and attempt to capture the essence of a subject, without being burdened with detail. I allow loose lines, and often a lot, to dominate.
Accurate representation is not the point of gestural drawings that can produce mistakes and wrong lines that can help the act of drawing as experimentation and discovery and apparently even useful sections! I am serious when I draw, so I can’t call it sketching, even for a 2 minute piece. Rapid gestural drawings are finished works. It is not always necessary for a drawing to be 'accurate' as long as there is enough information to describe the subject. All of these points demonstrate the humanity and vulnerability of the artist. We are extremely exposed in these moments.
But if a drawing is more academic in its approach to represent a subject, its purpose is still to be of technical and emotional use to the artist.
